Fourth Green Flag Award for park - 21 Jul 2008
Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, Pontypridd, has won the prestigious Green Flag Award for the fourth year running.
The award is the national standard for quality parks and green spaces, recognising excellence in the management and delivery of service within the Parks sector. Ynysangharad Park is one of only 19 sites across Wales to achieve the honour this year.
Winning the Green Flag Award is the culmination of another busy year for the park, which has hosted events such as the Teddy Bears Picnic and Parti Ponty, attended by thousands of children earlier this month. It also hosted some of the events during Ponty's Big Weekend, the entertainment extravaganza from July 18-21, with singer Rhydian Roberts among the star performers.
From August 1-3, 2008, the park will be the setting for the Big Welsh Bite, a fabulous food and agriculture festival, featuring entertainment for all the family.
Councillor Robert Bevan, Rhondda Cynon Taf Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation, said: "We are delighted the park has achieved Green Flag status for the fourth year running. It is a very special place and this award is a reflection of the ongoing hard work and dedication of its staff. "
Paul Todd, Green Flag Award scheme application manager, said: "The increasing number of Green Flag award-winning parks and green spaces highlights the important role they play in bringing people together and improving their quality of life. Congratulations to all the management, staff, and in particular, thousands of volunteers whose hard work and dedication has brought this award of excellence."
A record 742 green spaces across the country, all freely accessible to the public, this year received a Green Flag Award. Winners are judged to be welcoming and well-maintained, with the support and involvement of the local community. All winners will celebrate their achievements and collect their flags at a ceremony in Liverpool on Thursday, July 24.
