Rhydian Roberts In Ponty! - 18 Jul 2008

Rhydian Roberts

X Factor star Rhydian Roberts will headline the first Ponty's Big Weekend, which also includes Sandi Thom, Alpha Beat and the Blackout.

The popularity of the artists involved has meant a high level of ticket requests and has resulted in over 4,000 tickets collected by eager music fans for the Big Weekend. The increased capacity made available by the Council means there will be 6000 tickets up for grabs, in total, for the event.

The event also plays host to Pontypridd's first Open Air Cinema in partnership with Red Dragon FM. This strong demand and the imminent announcement of other high profile artists has led the Council to increase the number of tickets available from five to six thousand.

The weekend starts on July 18th with a free open-air cinema. Vote for your film choice on Red Dragon FM from July 1st. On the same night, AlphaBeat make a special one-night-only performance at the town's Muni Arts Centre.

The Muni also hosts up and coming local band the Blackout on Saturday 19th July.

Sunday will see a free family fun day at the fantastic Ynysangharad Park, culminating in a spectacular free open-air concert headlined by Rhydian Roberts.

The concert will also feature a variety of well-known entertainers including artist Sandi Thom, Pontypridd comedian and TV presenter Chris Corcoran, former Fame Academy contestant James Fox, Welsh singer-songwriter Mal Pope and Daisy Blue.

Also on stage will be exciting new talent Go Audio, entertainers Daz, up and coming young artist Kadesha Affrica Drija and one of Wales's most famous male voice choirs, the award-winning Cor Meibion Pontypridd.

Finally on Monday July 21st Cor Meibion Pontypridd and a 90-piece youth orchestra from Germany will perform a free classical concert in the Muni Arts Centre to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the council's twinning association with the town of Nurtingen in Germany. Cor Meibion Pontypridd established the twinning link in 1968 and since that time further links with other European neighbours have been developed.

Tickets for the concert and the cinema in the Park are free and available from the Muni Arts Centre on 01443 485934, The Coliseum in Aberdare on 01685 881188 and the Park and Dare, Treorchy on 01443 773112.

Tickets for AlphaBeat and the Blackout can be purchased from the Muni Arts Centre on 01443 485934 and www.seetickets.co.uk or www.p4music.co.uk

There will be 6,000 tickets available for both Movies in the Park and Music in the Park, but with a heavy demand expected, the Council are advising visitors to book early. Tickets are limited to six per person.
