Coalhouse Family Launch New Tourism Scheme - 27 Mar 2008

Welsh celebrities who went back in time for the hugely acclaimed Coalhouse series made a special visit to Rhondda Cynon Taf to help promote the Council’s new tourism strategy and launch a new information kiosk.
The Griffiths family, who were instant favourites with viewers of the successful BBC reality tv show which followed the lives of several families who spent time trying to make ends meet in a 1926 mining village, recently visited Rhondda Heritage Park.
They came along to the popular tourist attraction to launch the new Herian Information Kiosk at the site. The new interactive kiosk is one of 22 to be situated throughout Wales to provide information at the touch of a button about the history of the areas.
The Griffiths family helped to launch the kiosks with Heritage Minister Rhodri Glyn Thomas. Linked through a central web server, the information kiosks use Google Mapping and satellite images to guide people from site to site, using wherever possible the region’s expanding network of walking and cycling trails, which predominantly follow the routes of former industrial transport arteries, such as tow paths, tramways and rail lines.
The information points are the brainchild of HERIAN – Heritage in Action – a partnership of councils and other bodies, established to promote the legacy of the industrial past.
During their visit to Rhondda Heritage Park, the Griffiths family also promoted the new website launched by Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council to increase tourism in the area. The website, www.destinationrct.co.uk, has already proved a major success by encouraging more visitors to the county borough as a perfect location for short breaks and day visits.
Group Director for Environmental Services George Jones explained: "This is another example of a first-class initiative launched by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to help increase tourism prospects in the county borough which will naturally lead to further economic benefits for our communities.
"The website has already been developed as a catalyst to encourage even more visitors into Rhondda Cynon Taf and I’m delighted that it has been viewed by so many potential tourists to date."
